Borderlands: Gloria Anzaldua’s Mestizaje

Part of the Course "Postcolonial Literatures" at the Department of English and American Studies, University of Stuttgart

Beginn 11.30 Uhr

Universität Stuttgart . Keplerstr. 17, Kollegiengebäude 2 (K2), Raum 11.01 . 70174 Stuttgart

The course offers a survey of postcolonial literatures focusing on texts from the Americas, Africa, and India. On April 28, we will discuss Gloria E. Anzaldúa’s text Borderlands/La Frontera: La Mestiza, which voices the friction felt by those living between worlds. As Anzaldúa’s narrator struggles with the indigenous and colonial pasts of the Mexican-American community and claims her place in the world as a strong, self-contradictory, and self-determined woman, she counters official US-American historiography and provides us with a compelling perspective on Chicana experiences. The course will explore the various textual and cultural traditions bringing out the postcolonial dimensions of this cross-genre text.
