Trumps neue Linie – Das Recht des Stärkeren im globalen Wettbewerb

Die als realistisch bezeichnete, aber sozialdarwinistisch anmutende Weltsicht von US-Präsident Trump und seiner Sicherheitsberater widerspricht der in Deutschland bevorzugten liberal-internationalistischen Vorstellung einer regelbasierten Weltordnung, in der etwa die Welthandelsorganisation (WTO), die auch wertorientierte NATO, die Vereinten Nationen, das Völkerrecht und das Gleichheitsprinzip der UN-Charta eine zentrale Rolle spielen. Im Sinne ihres ‚principled realism‘ sehen Präsident Trump und seine Sicherheitsberater die Durchsetzung Amerikas nationaler Interessen vor. Militärische Macht ist dabei ausschlaggebend, um im härter werdenden internationalen Wettbewerb zu gewinnen – zwangsläufig auf Kosten anderer Nationen. Wie sollten Deutschland und Europa auf die gravierenden Auswirkungen dieser in den USA nunmehr dominanter werdenden „realistischen“ Weltsicht außen-, sicherheits- und handelspolitisch, bestenfalls mit einer Gesamtstrategie reagieren? Dr. Josef Braml, der zahlreiche Bücher über Präsident Trump und die USA veröffentlicht hat, wird über diese Herausforderungen sprechen und auf die aktuellen Entwicklungen im militärischen Haushalt der USA zu sprechen kommen. Nach einem Impulsvortrag hat das Publikum die Möglichkeit mit ihm zu diskutieren. Ein kleiner Mittagssnack wird gereicht.

The worldview of U.S. President Trump and his national security advisers, labelled as realist but expressing seemingly social Darwinist principles, contradicts Germany’s liberal internationalist perception of a rule-based world order, in which the World Trade Organization (WTO), the value-centered NATO, the United Nations, the law of nations, and the principle of egalitarianism of the UN Charter play a central role. The president and his advisers build the enforcement of the United States’ national interests on their ‘principled realism.’ Military power thereby constitutes a highly decisive factor in order to stand out as the winner of an international competition which becomes increasingly tougher. This strategy, however, is implemented at the expense of other nations. How should Germany and Europe react to the severe impacts which result from this “realist” worldview that henceforth becomes increasingly dominant - especially with regard to foreign policy, security policy, and trade measures – and which shape could their overall strategy assume? Dr. Josef Braml, who has published numerous books on President Trump and the United States, will talk about these challenges and address current developments in the military household of the U.S. After a short lecture, the audience will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion with Dr. Braml. A lunchtime snack will be served.
